What keeps blowing my mind about Iqbal is this: a man who lived more than a hundred years ago can still sound like he is commenting on the present.

That is one reason I keep returning to him. His poetry does not stay trapped in its own era. It keeps finding its way into new problems, new systems, new forms of human ambition.

And this verse in particular, to me, sits uncomfortably close to the AI 2027 paper.

The whole forecast is really about the limits of technical rationality. People assume intelligence, optimization, and capability automatically lead to control. Iqbal’s verse pushes against that. It reminds the reader that reason is not the whole story, and that raw power without deeper wisdom can still outrun judgment.

I came across the AI 2027 paper when it was first published in 2025, and I have been following it closely ever since. It stayed with me because it was not written like another vague futurist take on AI.

It was concrete. Specific. It tried to map a near-future path in which frontier AI advances quickly, automated research accelerates, incentives harden, and governance struggles to keep up.

Published by the AI Futures Project, AI 2027 lays out one possible future for advanced AI, with two broad endings: slowdown and race. You do not have to agree with every part of its forecast to see why it matters.

The deeper question it raises is the one that should make anyone pause: what happens when capability starts moving faster than wisdom, oversight, and institutional control?

What is the AI 2027 paper & who wrote it?

The AI 2027 paper was published by the AI Futures Project, a nonprofit focused on forecasting the future of AI. According to the project’s About page, the main scenario content was written by Daniel Kokotajlo, Eli Lifland, Thomas Larsen, and Romeo Dean.

The site also notes that Scott Alexander rewrote the material into a more engaging style, which helps explain why the document reads less like a dry research memo and more like a tightly-argued future history.

The names matter because this is part of why the paper got taken seriously so quickly.

Daniel Kokotajlo previously worked at OpenAI on governance and scenario planning, and the site points back to his earlier forecasting work, including What 2026 Looks Like. Eli Lifland is presented as a forecasting specialist focused on AI capabilities, and the page notes that he ranks first on the RAND Forecasting Initiative’s all-time leaderboard.

Thomas Larsen focuses on AI agents, goals, and real-world impacts. Romeo Dean focuses on AI chip production and usage. In other words, this was not framed as a general-opinion piece. It was presented as a scenario built by people trying to think seriously about timelines, incentives, and bottlenecks.

That is part of what makes the paper more interesting than the usual AI discourse. It does not come from nowhere. It comes from a cluster of people working close to forecasting, policy, and frontier-AI implications.

The project also says the scenario was informed by dozens of tabletop exercises and feedback from hundreds of reviewers, including people across AI labs, policy, and forecasting circles. That does not make the forecast correct. But it does make it more structured than the average viral AI take.

The paper does not mainly argue that models will get incrementally better. It argues that capability gains could start compounding through the system itself.

It also predicts that the effects would not stay confined to tech labs. If the scenario is even directionally right, the consequences spill into labor, science, cyber risk, national security, and geopolitical competition. The paper keeps returning to race dynamics. The real issue here is merely that stronger AI arrives in a world full of incentives to deploy first and govern later.

So the simplest summary is this: AI 2027 predicts short timelines, fast capability gains, AI-driven research acceleration, and a dangerous gap between what frontier systems may be able to do and what human systems may still be able to control.

The two AI 2027 endings: slowdown vs race

One of the most useful parts of AI 2027 is that it does not present the future as a single straight line. It gives two endings: slowdown and race. That alone makes the paper more interesting. It admits that capability is only part of the story. The rest depends on incentives, coordination, and whether institutions can still act before competitive pressure takes over.

In the slowdown ending, actors respond with more restraint. Progress does not stop, but deployment pressure is moderated by oversight, coordination, and a greater willingness to slow things down when the risks start looking serious.

In the race ending, the opposite happens. Labs and states keep pushing because the fear of falling behind becomes stronger than the fear of losing control. That is why this distinction matters.

Is AI 2027 realistic or too speculative?

This is where the paper becomes worth arguing with.

The reason people took AI 2027 seriously is that it does something rare: it stops hiding behind vague futurism. It names actors, pressures, timelines, and failure modes.

Even if you disagree with it, you can see what you are disagreeing with. That is a strength. A lot of AI commentary stays safely abstract. This one does not.

But that same specificity is also where skepticism enters. The timeline may be too aggressive. The scenario can sometimes read less like a probability distribution and more like a tightly-plotted future history.

And critics such as Gary Marcus have pushed back on exactly that point, arguing that the paper overstates speed and confidence in areas where real uncertainty is still very high.

That is probably the right way to hold it. Not as prophecy. Not as hype. As a serious scenario built on serious assumptions, some of which may age well and some of which may not.

Even if the exact 2027 timeline turns out to be wrong, the deeper value of the paper remains: it forces people to confront what short AI timelines would actually mean, instead of treating “AGI someday” as a vague background idea.

And even if the exact scenario proves too aggressive, the deeper issue it raises is not going away: if capability keeps compounding, the real contest may not be about whether we can build smarter systems, but whether we can govern them before speed becomes the only value left.
